Muhammad Ali makes his TV-movie dramatic debut in this adaptation of a Howard Fast novel. This is the true-life story of Gideon Jackson (Ali), a former slave and Union solider who returns home to South Carolina following the American Civil War, during the Reconstruction Era in the South. With the help of a sharecropper (Kristofferson), Jackson unites former slaves and white tenant farmers, under a common cause. Jackson is elected to the state legislature and eventually to the U.S. Senate, all while coming face to face with opposition from white landowners, law enforcement, and the KKK.
