Recorded on March 26, 1978 at the Showboat Lounge, Silver Spring, Maryland
American singer and composer Mose Allison gained fame playing a unique combination of blues and modern jazz. Upon moving to New York in 1956, he worked steadily in the city’s clubs collaborating with fellow jazz musicians Stan Getz, Al Cohn, and Zoot Sims.
This 1978 live recording captures Allison performing as part of a trio alongside bassist Tom Rutley and drummer Jerry Granelli. Since Allison only recorded one album during 1973-81, this set captures a rare moment in the artist’s history. Most of the material is drawn from Allison’s standard repertoire, but the singer’s spirited delivery and interplay with the audience make this recording special. Highlights include “Wildman on the Loose,” “Swinging Machine,” “I Live the Life I Love,” “I Ain’t Got Nothin’ But the Blues” and “Your Mind Is on Vacation.”
