An American born radio broadcaster, Alex Holbeck (Martin Sheen) who has been living in Paris since his defection from East Germany is recruited to return to East Berlin carrying a microprocessor that can unscramble a Russian computer code and thwart a Russian scheme to assassinate five Soviet dissidents on Christmas Day.
K.G.B. agent Dimitri Vasilkov (Sam Neill) plays a game of cat-and-mouse with Alex and his old flame, Karen (Brigitte Fossey), who is the daughter of an important dissident in plenty of trouble of her own.
